Our Athletic Programs

Alpine

The alpine program at Carrabassett Valley Academy combines sports science principles with our experience working with world-class athletes, equipping racers for success. Our athletes earn podium finishes at national championships, invitations to prestigious development camps, and compete in elite FIS races. Many graduates progress to NCAA and USCSA colleges, with some joining the U.S. Ski Team.

The CVA Difference

Located at Sugarloaf Mountain, Carrabassett Valley Academy offers an ideal environment for alpine athletes. Here's what sets us apart:
World-Class Training Venue: Sugarloaf is home to the only FIS-certified downhill course in the Eastern United States.
Progressive Terrain: Athletes train on diverse terrain, allowing them to advance their skills at home.
Optimal Facilities: A dedicated, high-speed surface lift and advanced snowmaking ensure consistent, high-quality training.
Extended On-Snow Training Season: Sugarloaf's long season reduces travel, maximizing training time and minimizing costs.

EXPERIENCED AND DEDICATED COACHING TEAM

Alpine Program Director Kirk Dwyer brings unparalleled experience and success to CVA. A level 500 certified coach, Kirk has decades of alpine coaching expertise, including roles as Executive Director at Ski and Snowboard Club Vail and Headmaster at Burke Mountain Academy, where he coached Mikaela Shiffrin.

Kirk's coaching team has comprehensive experience, having competed and coached at the highest levels, including NCAA championships, World Cup events, Junior World Championships, and the Olympics.

Program Philosophy

The CVA Alpine program emphasizes long-term athlete development through proven training methods.
On-Snow Camps: Intensive training periods to focus on technical and tactical skills.
Technical & Tactical Development: Coaching focuses on refining skiing techniques and strategies for competition.
Process-Based Goals: Goals are set with a focus on the process of improvement over outcomes.
Periodization Training: Structured phases ensure peak performance during competitions.

Year-Round Training

A successful athlete trains for their sport year-round. CVA athletes supplement training with spring, summer, and fall camps to provide 130+ on-snow days per year. Attending CVA for the fall and spring terms allows our student-athletes to work with trainers and high-performance consultants to get the most out of the competitive season, and to become well-established and comfortable in the classroom before the busy Winter Term gets underway. Our off-season training program includes evaluations and goal setting, weight training, cross-training, and mental performance training.
